Wildfire Preparedness Information and Links

Our community is a Firewise community and we work closely with the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) and other wildfire preparedness organizations. The resources below provide excellent information about wildfire preparedness, defensible space, home hardening, evacuation planning, and emergency preparedness.

These websites are the best sources for official guidance and detailed information.

Orange County Fire Authority – Ready, Set, Go!

The Orange County Fire Authority provides extensive wildfire preparedness information through their Ready, Set, Go!program. This program focuses on preparing homes, creating defensible space, and planning for evacuation before a wildfire occurs.

Important OCFA wildfire preparedness pages:

These pages include information on:

  • Defensible space
  • Home hardening
  • Ember awareness
  • Evacuation planning
  • Emergency supply kits
  • Vegetation management
  • Wildfire safety planning

OCFA also offers home assessments and wildfire safety inspections that can help homeowners understand ways to reduce wildfire risk around their homes.

Firewise Communities Program

Our community is part of the Firewise USA® program, which is a national program that helps communities work together to reduce wildfire risk and improve preparedness. The Firewise program focuses on the Home Ignition Zone, which includes the home and the area around it where improvements can reduce the risk of ignition from embers.

Firewise emphasizes:

  • Defensible space
  • Home hardening
  • Landscaping and vegetation management
  • Community education
  • Neighborhood cooperation
  • Ongoing mitigation projects

Firewise communities work together to improve safety and resilience rather than relying on individual efforts alone.

South Orange County Fire Safe Council

Our area is also supported by the Fire Safe Council of South Orange County, which provides local wildfire readiness information, defensible space guidance, home hardening checklists, evacuation information, and community programs.

You can visit their website here:

They provide local resources specifically for South Orange County communities.

Defensible Space and Home Hardening

One of the most important concepts in wildfire safety is defensible space, which is the buffer between a structure and surrounding vegetation. This space helps slow or stop fire spread and gives firefighters a safer area to defend a home.

Defensible space typically includes:

  • Clearing dead vegetation
  • Spacing plants and shrubs
  • Trimming trees
  • Reducing combustible materials near structures
  • Maintaining landscaping
  • Keeping roofs and gutters clear
  • Protecting vents and openings
  • Managing vegetation on slopes

Emergency Preparedness and Evacuation Planning

Wildfire preparedness also includes planning for evacuation and emergencies. OCFA recommends that families and neighborhoods:

  • Create a family emergency plan
  • Identify evacuation routes
  • Register for AlertOC emergency notifications
  • Prepare emergency supply kits
  • Plan for pets and important documents
  • Establish meeting locations
  • Stay informed during fire weather and wind events

These steps help families evacuate safely and quickly if necessary.
